The Qualsafe Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (RQF) is a nationally recognised and regulated qualification designed for individuals who are responsible for providing basic life support (BLS) in emergency situations. This qualification is particularly relevant for those who may be required to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as part of their role, whether in the workplace, voluntary, or community settings.

This qualification aims to equip learners with the essential skills and knowledge to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies. It provides critical training for individuals who play an active role in the health and safety of others, whether they work in high-risk environments or are simply keen to be prepared to assist in emergency situations.

Course Objective

The primary goal of this course is to develop learners’ confidence and competence in performing BLS and using an AED. By completing this qualification, learners will be equipped to confidently act in emergency situations, providing immediate life-saving interventions such as chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the correct use of an AED to help restore a normal heart rhythm to a casualty suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.

Key Features

Targeted for Individuals with a Responsibility for BLS: This course is ideal for employees in a variety of workplaces, including those who may work with vulnerable individuals (e.g., elderly, children, or those with pre-existing medical conditions). It is also suitable for volunteers, community workers, and anyone involved in public safety or care.

Nationally Recognised and Regulated Qualification: The qualification is accredited and regulated by Qualsafe, providing learners with a recognised qualification that meets current health and safety standards.

Hands-on, Practical Learning: The course includes practical sessions where learners will actively practice BLS techniques such as CPR and how to properly use an AED in a simulated emergency environment. This ensures that learners are confident in their abilities to perform these life-saving techniques.

Emergency Response Focus: In addition to BLS and AED usage, the course covers important aspects of emergency response, including assessing the scene for safety, recognising the signs of cardiac arrest, and knowing when to call for emergency medical help.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, learners will:

1. Understand the importance of basic life support and how it can significantly increase the chance of survival in a cardiac emergency.

2. Be proficient in performing CPR for both adults and children, including chest compressions and rescue breaths.

3. Be trained in the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including how to attach the pads, follow the prompts, and deliver shocks when necessary.

4. Know how to assess an emergency situation and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the casualty and those around them, including recognising when professional medical assistance is needed.

5. Feel confident and competent in providing life-saving interventions in both professional and community settings.

Intended Audience

This qualification is ideal for anyone who may be called upon to provide basic life support and use an AED in an emergency situation. It is particularly suitable for:

• Employees in high-risk environments such as offices, schools, factories, or gyms.

• Community volunteers or individuals involved in public events.

• First responders and care staff in healthcare settings.

• Parents, caregivers, and family members who want to be prepared in case of an emergency involving sudden cardiac arrest.

Whether you are a first aider, a team member in a workplace, or a volunteer in a community setting, the Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an AED will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently and competently respond to emergencies involving sudden cardiac arrest.
